LED (Light emitting diode)

What is LED?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, a kind of semiconductor which is used to give and receive the electronic signal into infrared rays or light, using the characteristics of compound semiconductor.

LED History
LED emerged in early 1960’s by using the semi-conductor light emitting theory, red LED and yellow LED emerged in 1964, blue and green color LED came out in 1994. White LED was developed in 1996.
In recent years, with people’s deeper research of semiconductor luminescent materials, LED manufacturing process has been greatly improved and new materials (nitrogen and phosphor crystals) are developed and applied to use, super bright LED of different color has been developed and with light efficiency thousands of times higher than before. In the history of lighting, High Brightness LED is one of the greatest inventions after Edison invented the incandescent bulbs.

LED Application
LED has inherent characteristics, such as energy saving, long life, shock resistant, fast response, cold source make it very suitable to be used as indicator. Lights, display, landscape lighting, and other fields. We can also find LED applications in our daily life everywhere: home appliances, telephones, the dashboard lighting, vehicles fog lights and traffic lights. However, due to the limits of its packaging, heat radiance, high cost, temporarily it is not suitable to be used as a universal lighting source.

Essential features of LED

High efficiency:
After decades of improvement of LED technology, its luminous efficiency has been greatly increased. Incandescent, CCD optical efficiency is about 12-24 lumens / W, fluorescent lamp’s efficiency is 50-70 lumens / watt, sodium lamp is 90-140 lumens / watt, most of the power consumption of these types of light sources just converse into heat loss.
LED’s efficiency can reach 50-200 lumens / watt, and it has good monochrome, narrow spectrum and can sent directly visible color light. Currently, countries around the world stepped up the studies of the LED light efficiency; we believe in the near future there will be greater luminous efficiency improvement.

Low power consumption
Single-tube LED power is 0.03-0.06 watts, DC-driven, single-drive voltage 1.5-3.5 volts, current 15-18mA, fast response, can be operated under high-frequency. The power consumption of LED is only 10% of incandescent lamp.
LED basic information

Long life
LED’s Life can be up to 100,000 hours, tens of times longer than any ordinary lamp. LED is with small size, light weight; epoxy housing can withstand high intensity mechanical shock and vibration, hard to be broken, stable and reliable, and costs low for maintenance.

Safe
LED is with low thermal radiation, cold light source and low voltage, can be safely touched; can precisely control light luminous perspective, gives non-glare soft-color; Mercury and sodium free. Built-in micro-processing system can control luminescence strength and achieve an optical and art combined performance.

Environment friendly
No Mercury and sodium and no other substances brings potential health hazards. Waste Recyclable and no pollution.

Good Applicability
LED is all-solid-state illuminant object; it has good ability of anti-shock and impact resistance, hard to be broken. It is also small in size, can be easily developed into short, thin and small portable lighting products, also easy to install and maintain.

Comparison of LED and traditional source
Comparing LED with the traditional energy-saving lamps, metal halogen lamps, tungsten, magnesium neon, cold cathode lamps, fluorescent, neon, LED has below advantages:
